Blythe Danner reveals she has oral cancer, which claimed life of husband Bruce Paltrow in 1997.
LARRY WILSON and BRUCE PALTLOW have spoken of the shock they have experienced after learning that one of their closest friends – the actress and best-selling author – has been treated for cancer.
The pair were told on Tuesday night that Danner had been diagnosed with an “early stage” form of oral cancer. She was being treated at MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas through a clinical trial in the US, with results expected in about five weeks.
“Blythe, in this time of uncertainty, has been extraordinary to us,” the actor, 52, said in a statement, adding: “Although I have known about her diagnosis for more than two months now, it has come as a shocking and unexpected shock. It is no easy task for anyone to accept and accept responsibility for the choices we make.”
He added: “We are heartbroken. We have loved Blythe more than anyone we know. We will support her, love her, and fight with her every step of the way.”
Paltrow, also 52, said in a statement: “I wish to thank Blythe for her friendship, her support, her love and for reminding me that it’s never too late to face your fears.”
Danner was married to the actor from 1976 until their 1991 divorce.
The couple had three children together, but divorced in 1998 after nearly 50 years together.
Friends say the star was delighted to hear of her health issue.
“Her family and friends are all very pleased for her,” said a statement from Danner’s family.
“We know that this has been a difficult ordeal for her and we are extremely grateful that all of her treatment is being handled as sensitively and professionally as possible.”
The hospital statement read: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Danner family during this very difficult time. All at MD Anderson are committed to getting her through this difficult period, working with her physicians to make her as comfortable as possible.
