Doug Ducey says Trump should be in the room when his administration meets with lawmakers

Democratic Arizona governor-elect says White House isn’t ‘doing enough’ about the border

The governor-elect of a border state said President Donald Trump should be in the room when his administration meets with lawmakers to discuss immigration, but Democrats aren’t going to do the same until they have a deal on border security.

“The White House is not doing enough to secure our border,” the newly elected Doug Ducey told reporters on the steps of the Arizona Capitol building. “We need the president to be sitting in the room when these guys have had a meeting. But that’s not happening right now.”

The comments by Ducey came after the president tweeted out a photo of Attorney General Jeff Sessions meeting with the president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, and a photograph of former Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Sessions posing together in the Oval Office.

The president also tweeted out a photo of his meeting with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, as well as House Speaker Paul Ryan, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

But Ducey said he isn’t sure why the Trump administration is meeting with lawmakers when “we have people here illegally, they’re being allowed a path towards citizenship, we’ve had a record number of asylum-seekers at the border and our border police are being attacked.”

“Do they need to be meeting with them as the majority in our country?” he asked. “I don’t know.”

Ducey has previously called for a “border fence” along the United States-Mexico border, but Ducey wouldn’t say when exactly he’d like to see one constructed or what a border fence might look like.

Ducey has also previously expressed support for Trump’s controversial border wall, which is currently being built with private contractors.

“I do want a border wall,” he told a local newspaper in early May. “I’ve always supported the wall, but not in the way that Mr. Trump is supporting it.”
