HOUSTON — The Houston Chronicle newspaper is reporting that two local police officers shot and killed an unarmed motorist, in what police are calling a death investigation.
The newspaper says the shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. Monday outside a home in southwest Houston. Police have said they received reports that a man was armed with a handgun, but it appears he was not the attacker.
The Houston Police Department on Monday morning released a statement describing the motorist killed in the shooting.
“After a lengthy investigation, two officers involved in the shooting with an armed suspect died last night,” HPD Public Information Officer Kekoa Ade-Ola said. “The suspect remains at large.”
The car that was involved in the shooting was towed earlier in the evening, HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. The car is registered to the woman whose name is on the driver’s license, Silva said. The newspaper says that she was not injured in the incident.
The police department is withholding the name of the deceased man at the request of his family, Silva said. The man’s name has not previously been released in connection with the investigation.
A spokeswoman for the Harris County medical examiner’s office says the woman who died in the shooting is being identified. Hilda Aguilar says on Tuesday morning that the medical examiner is trying to determine the reasons for the woman’s death.
She says the manner of death will be determined later.
