Nigeria, one of the poorest nations in the world, is facing a growing food shortage and recent reports indicate that the country could face a famine by the end of 2019.

Meckos.com is developing ColdHubs, an ingenious solution to the challenges faced by this vulnerable population, which is living on less than two dollars a day. Each ColdHub is built from one half of an aluminum alloy cube equipped with six sheets of cling film. The research company behind the project is using advanced technology to keep food available by cooling it from -20 to -45 degrees Celsius while providing heat to the left-hand side of the container.

New research centre for new ventures in Nigeria

“Technology has the potential to stop famine in Nigeria,” said Jayaben Desai, a senior research scientist at Meckos.com, in a statement. “The ColdHubs can be accessed by someone in any part of the world using a mobile device.”

Desai has previously worked with humanitarian organizations to come up with solutions in extreme conditions, such as overcast days or heavy rain.

“The design allows people to have access to storage that is immediate and consumable,” she said.

“I’m encouraged by the enthusiasm of Nigerians, especially younger people, in developing technology.”

The Ugandan firm also developed a series of chutes, the ColdOtter, which allow tea to be stored in them for use later when conditions improve.

Future of space travel

The ColdHubs are currently being built at a temperature (-20 to -45 degrees Celsius) many places around the world. They can be found in Dhaka, Ghana, Accra, Liberia, Makati in the Philippines, the US cities of Portland and Baltimore, and many more.

The next project for Meckos.com is a ColdHUB in New York City.
