Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Laver Cup after he was not cleared to take part due to ‘personal reasons’..

The Spaniard, who is ranked No.1 in the world, was involved in a car crash on the way to the Laver Cup at Wimbledon.

Nadal, who was at the top of the draw and is one of the favourites, pulled out of the tournament to’recover his health’.

He explained: “It’s my personal life but I have to recover mentally and physically.

“If they let me participate it would be a huge problem on my mind as I’m the No.1 player.

“I just have to get out of it and let it go and hope for the best and that people believe me when I tell them that I’m not 100% fit to play.

“I’m not 100% fit to play, I am not ready.”

Nadal added: “I am really disappointed about this. Normally, when I withdraw from tournaments, everyone says ‘this is great’.

“But now everyone knows that I’m not ready. So now I have to recover mentally and physically.

“This is more difficult for me because I’m No.1, I have to work hard and I need to be at my best.”

Nadal and Serena Williams will play their third match on Tuesday in a best of three tie.

Nadal, who has lost only one set during 15 previous encounters with Williams, said: “Serena is a great player, a great competitor and will have to get on top of the court and try to defend her lead.

“We will play a match where Serena will have to defend her lead in order to stay healthy going into Roland Garros
