COVID-19: The new chickenpox vaccine arrives

This just in from Scholastic, makers of the COVID-19 nasal spray vaccine!

Scholastic Inc. (SCHL: NYSE) announced today that the first version of a new vaccination for children ages 5 to 11 containing COVID-19, a new adjuvant. COVID-19 appears to be more efficient, gentler, and a better match to the chickenpox virus. This is the first vaccine for children recommended to include COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccine is the first time Scholastic has made a preventive vaccination using a new adjuvant.

“We believe that the COVID-19 adjuvant should help to extend the use of this vaccine,” said Aimee Clingerman, MD, executive director of medical affairs for PBS Children’s Health Channel. “Children with chronic health problems are among those who will benefit most from the COVID-19 adjuvant’s formulation. This innovative approach should help address unmet medical needs.”

COVID-19, known commercially as Bronchitol® Vaccine, is a new class of vaccine adjuvants that are more effective and gentle on the nose of susceptible infants and children, and less irritating than saline and commercially available osmothers. The allergy-neutralizing, live-variety fowl (called chickenpox) vaccine has a very broad spectrum, resulting in a more durable, more potent product for children with multiple health problems or those who have a disrupted immune system.

“We are so grateful to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their leadership and leadership on COVID-19,” said Jonathan Carroll, president of Scholastic Bioscience. “They have shown us incredible trust by supporting this concept from the start, and we cannot thank them enough for the trust they have lent us in order to make this vaccine.”

Scholastic will introduce the COVID-19 adjuvant in Scholastic CHiPS®Vaccine for Autism, which is now available for pre-order in more than 200,000 children across the United States. The COVID-19 adjuvant is being offered with the Medicare Part B payer, UnitedHealthcare. “The COVID-19 adjuvant is a highly desired vaccine adjuvant because it is more potent than other methods and allows the vaccine to be more long-lasting for immunization with fewer adverse effects on the nasal mucosa,” said Alan Sontag, MD, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare’s Specialty Pharmacy.

WHEN: COVID-19® vaccine will begin to be distributed during the summer months, to coincide with the start of school. The public will be able to enroll for vaccinations in the Gold Star Mall in Chicago on May 28.

WHAT: COVID-19 vaccine, with COVID-19 as the adjuvant, will be available for those ages 5 to 11 and in private, public, and religious care settings. Classes will be available for those who do not wish to be immunized. All third-degree relatives of parents enrolled in the vaccine program will be required to participate.
