John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) on Tuesday night became the second House Republican — after the speaker — to join the short list of possible speaker candidates that include, according to a memo from Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho), Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Rep. Trey Grayson (R-Fla.).

Boehner’s name was floated, then taken off that list, and he was told he was still on the list when the roll call was taken at 2 a.m.

A spokesman for the speaker said there was no change in Boehner’s position that he would serve to at least 2022 under a potential agreement between Boehner and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). House rules would have to be tweaked to make the switch.

The current House Republican meeting schedule calls for a meeting between Boehner and McCarthy on Wednesday, followed by a leadership retreat by the four other GOP members on Thursday.
