Staying safe this Thanksgiving with COVID-19, flu and RSV

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services is urging New Jersey residents to take precautions to continue their safety and well-being this Thanksgiving and the following days.

This includes the following recommendations:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use the alcohol-based hand sanitizer available in stores.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

After coughing, sneezing, or experiencing a minor fever (100 degrees or higher), cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, a tissue, or your sleeve and tissue.

If you think you may have a respiratory illness, call your healthcare provider, or go to the emergency room if your symptoms get worse.

New Jersey residents with coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms can be tested for COVID-19 at many clinics and hospital facilities located throughout the state. The information below is not specific to New Jersey residents.

A health care provider may give you a test for COVID-19 if you are experiencing symptoms:

With a fever who has not had a fever within the past two days.

With cough who has not had cough within the past two days.

With shortness of breath who has not had shortness of breath within the past two days.

If you test positive for COVID-19 on a first visit to your healthcare provider, the following symptoms and findings will indicate treatment is needed:

Fever (100 degrees or higher) – the presence of your temperature is strong evidence that your immune system is under attack and you need to take additional steps to protect yourself. Fever means you are infected with COVID-19.

Cough (coughing up phlegm or mucus) – this is a sign that your immune system is under attack and you need to take steps to protect yourself. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that makes it hard for your body’s immune system to fight off infection
